Mood Disorder

Mood disorders magnify human experiences to larger-than-life proportions

In addition to mood there are disturbances of , thought, psychomotor state, motivation, behaviour, physiological and psychological functions.

Depression: Depressed mood, anhedonia, feelings of worthlessness, change in appetite, change in sleep, change in body activity, loss of energy, excessive and in appropriate guilt, decreased concentration, indecisiveness, procrastination, suicidal ideation.

Mild depression:

Insomnia, reduced sense of well-being, distressed rather than ill, lack of interest, speak of anxiety and depression, loss of zestful, fatigue, diminished ability to concentrate and depressed mood most of the day and every day.

Major depression:

Emotional symptoms, psychomotor symptoms either retarred or agitated, negative belief, low self-esteem and inappropriate guilt.

Hypomania:

Increased sense of well-being, irritable mood, busier, pressure of speech, makes more telephone calls, seductive.

Mania:

Impulsive, angry, less sleep, very hyperactive, always pleasant and cheerful, more pressure of speech, repeated telephone calls, spending spree, grandiosity, loosing insight and uncooperative for treatment.

Mania with Psychotic features:

Un cooperative for treatment, emotionally labile, very angry, very intrusive, very talkative, loud, no sleep, flight of thought, severely agitated, grandiosity, religious delusions, sexually very preoccupied.

Principles of treatment.

Diagnose properly, Avoid treatment of symptoms, be aware of cycling course of the disease, drugs are very useful  start low and go steady , with suicidal patient take extra care, maintain therapy, followed by non-pharmacological treatment.
